We did it! We finally opened this past weekend, Memorial Day weekend of all times, and to great success! Not only did we have great, full houses, but the reception in regards to the show has been terrific as well!

Last week was definitely a whirlwind of getting things done, last minute rehearsals, prepping for opening night reception, previews, etc. And in the end, it was all worth it as everything came together in a splendor that was once just a vision, but is now pure, dynamic, artistry. It's amazing when all the elements come together!!!

Huge thanks goes out to EVERYONE who has touched this show in one way or another, whether it be through our Kickstarter campaign, designers, volunteers, etc. All of you have helped bring this show to life, and as always, we are most grateful for you!!! What an awesome team!

With this said, here are a few photos from our opening weekend, including some awesome photos taken by our friend Keri Kaba of some of the scenes from the show.

I was first introduced to Ordinary Days when I started working at South Coast Repertory in November 2009. It was my first show at the theatre and I remember listening to the music and laughing and falling in love with it right away. But I didn't want to immediately share that love. I was protective of it, in the way one is protective of finding money on the street. You are afraid someone else will see it and claim it as theirs. At the same time, I knew this show was too beautiful to keep as a secret.

Just months beforehand, I had completed a run of Songs for a New World that I directed for Yes, And ... Productions, and I felt this show might appeal to its producers, Helen Ota and Mike Palma. I was right. After seeing it they called me right away praising the production, declaring their desire to produce it, and asking for information about the rights. -- My worst nightmare had come true. Someone else in my circle had discovered the gloriousness of Ordinary Days and Adam Gwon. And they hadn’t even discovered it on their own, I introduced it to them!

Now, more than two years later, that discussion has come to fruition. We're producing Ordinary Days and I'm directing it. And I don’t regret inviting Helen and Mike to see it. I'm excited about this production for two reasons. One, I just love this show. The SCR production was fantastic. It had big budgets, amazing talent and supportive audiences, but I always had a different vision of the show. To me, what Ordinary Days really focuses on is allowing the simple moments in life to be beautiful. A memory. A look. A word. These intimate moments are what make life worth living, and by putting the show in an intimate theatre, it’ll be hard not to really feel and appreciate them.

The second reason I'm excited about this production is that I love Adam Gwon's work. He has a brilliant mind and he is going to rise up to become one of America's greatest composers. And though he's growing in popularity, his work is still relatively new, so to be one of the first few hundred or so directors to bring his work to life is exciting. His humor and heart drip from the story while his music easily carries you away to emotionally beautiful places. And even in a piece that celebrates simple moments, there is complexity in the music, text and characters that still makes working with the show a challenge.

I hope you will join us for this production. I'm certain this production will make your "Ordinary Days" a little more extraordinary.

As of this writing, we are now just 14 days away from previews for "Ordinary Days", and what a journey it has been so far.

To begin, last Friday, some of the cast and crew were able to meet our show's composer, Adam Gwon down at South Coast Repertory. His current show, "Cloudlands" is playing down there, so our director Peter said that we may be able to catch him after the show. So we did!

We have to say Adam is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Very friendly and outgoing. It's so nice when you meet someone with such immense talent who is still grounded and personable. I say this living in an industry town where sometimes "stars" (and I use that loosely) think that the world owes them. (Yeah right). Nonetheless, Adam has our vote for being a really cool dude! Thanks for letting us take pictures with you Adam!

Getting closer to opening, it is now our pleasure to introduce to you the rest of our creative team. The unsung heroes that literally make the show what it is through their talents and creativity.

Drum roll please!...

Stefanie Wong Lau - Marketing/ Assoc. Producer. This is Stef's second go-around with Yes, And... Productions, and we are so grateful to have her with us! She's helping with getting the word out on the show, and with ticket sales. Yay for Stef.

Sandy Fury - Stage Manager. She's Peter's right-hand person, and essentially a second lieutenant. Without her we'd be rehearsing without breaks, and not knowing where our blocking is.

Nicholas Pilapil - Production Director. Nicholas helps Helen and myself with all the production stuff - logistics, inquiries, etc. Without him, life would be a whole lot more difficult.

Christopher Singleton - Lighting Designer. Chris is a lighting Ninja MASTER. So much so, his e-mail address starts off with "ninja lighting". He's so good at what he does! He can make a blank, black box look magical with his lighting expertise.

Chika Shimizu - Set Design. You've seen Chika here on the blog earlier with her model mock-up of the set. She's so awesome! I seriously can't wait to see her set built up to its fullest.

Rachel Stivers - Costume Design. Ah, costume design. Rachel is the person who will make us look like a million bucks come curtain time. Her designs are so good, that I'm keeping my stuff once the show is done.

Arturo Bentanzos - Property Master. Art is taking care of all the details from the libretto/script, making sure we have all the necessary props to make this New York "real". It ain't easy, but Art is pro at getting things when and where needed.

Mark Johnson - Sound Design. A later addition to the team, but glad to have him and his assistants on board to help bring the sounds of New York to life, as well as our voices! Big job, and we're looking forward to "hearing" from him. Ha!

And there you have it. The team. I may be forgetting someone, and if I have, my apologies. So many terrific people go into making a production come to life, and we're so lucky to have them on board. Without them, none of this would happen :)

Set! GO!!!Hi Everyone!

We're officially off and running with rehearsals for "Ordinary Days" and it has been a blast! We've all been rehearsing diligently, learning our parts, and getting our intentions in, that hey, we could put this whole thing up tomorrow if we wanted to! (Okay, maybe not, but still, it's going along pretty well).

Here are a few photos of our most recent rehearsals.
And, here we are, two years later, and ready to go!!!

The other reason why we wanted to come back to producing is to once again work with our amazing and talented friends! 2009's "Songs for a New World" was such a labor of love, that we knew we wanted to experience that "magic" again with our "band" of creatives! So we got the "band" back together again. This time through, we've added a few new faces to the mix, all of whom we know will make this yet another FUN experience.

This first installation to this blog for this project is to welcome everyone back, and to thank you for supporting our endeavors. We so appreciate the generosity and kindness of everyone, that we can't say "thank you" enough! So we'll say it again, THANK YOU!

As for the title of this post, the term "back to one" is used on film and TV sets letting everyone know to return to the beginning, to the start of the scene, etc. Since this our latest NEW show, I figured we had to start somewhere, and this post is our "ONE". We just can't wait to share Ordinary Days with everyone and show you where it'll end.

If you're coming across this page for the first time, and are interested in supporting our cause, please don't hesitate to go to our Kickstarter page, to learn more, and perhaps even help us make this production a reality. What started off as a simple song that we were learning in our vocal lessons, became a true highlight in my life and also helped me honor my late grandmother. As equally important is the fact that we were able to work with some of our most talented friends. Anytime anyone ever asked me about what made this production the success that it was (even before we ever got to the theater) I would always reiterate the fact that we had such a wonderful team of people working along side us, and that they should receive all the credit. I definitely tip my hat to all of them for putting in all their time, talents and efforts in making a dream come true. You probably get less than a handful of awesome teams in your life, and this one definitely is on that mantle of one of the best. For those of you who were fortunate to come out and see our work, you saw the splendor, emotion, and talents of those that you DIDN'T see on stage, those who really helped make we four "actors" shine out there under the lights. And for that, I give them all my utmost gratitude, love, and respect for being a part of this journey. Thanks team, for making this souvenir one of the best I'll ever have of my life - without you guys, it would've all still just been a dream. Thanks for helping me fulfill my own personal tribute to my grandmother. I know that somewhere, she was watching, and was so very happy that we did such a fantastic job.

Okay, so now that the formalities are done, on with more stuff! First off, thanks to everyone who have been following this blog, for all your support and best wishes! I know that we were able to practically fill all the seats to all our performances because of the great feedback we were getting from all of you, especially after our opening weekend. Also, thank you to those who did come out and watch us do our thing! It was so much fun performing in front of everyone, and hopefully, you all got to see that in our work! We have so many stories to take away from this production, you wouldn't believe it! Here are some super short descriptions, sometimes cryptic, and even more so, some "insider" production stuff:

- Peter always turns his head to the side when he's listening intently.
- Randy needs to always check that his drawstrings are tied up tight enough.
- JRB is very popular amongst our musicians. Hugely.
- I need to learn my blocking. No, seriously. I do.
- Get an intern for any production you may be a part of. And then call them "Intern".
- Just to make things fun, have a Hollywood production come in in the middle of your production just so you can re-adjust your lights between shows.
- Hope that your theater is near a Starbucks.
- Set up, strike. Set-up again, Strike again, and then Set-up again. Then, strike for good.
- For added kicks, fund the entire thing yourself.
- Pray that people will come out and watch (thank god!)
- Wear striped underwear for good measure. I'm not saying who.
- Push around a 700lb lighting rig for an entire day and NOT be tired doing it.
- Practically put your entire life on hold for the entire production.

Most importantly, sit back, enjoy the process and the company you keep, and relish in your accomplishment :)

Great times everyone. Thanks for being a part of it. This is not to say that "Yes, and... Productions" is finished, but this particular chapter is done for now.

Enjoy the photos :)

For those of you who attended our shows, this is what we were doing while you were filling up the seats - WATCHING YOU via our stage/house feed in the green room. Okay, not brutal, but definitely in full swing, especially since we are now just 2 weeks away from opening night! I do have to say that the production is looking great, and we'll definitely have an exciting show to present to everyone come October 16-25!

What's equally cool is that we got our band leader back! Nathan Wang, straight from his recent musical directoring (I know, it's not a word, but it works) in New York for East West Player's second production of "Imelda: A New Musical". Now that Nathan is back, our musical director Lisa, can breathe a sigh of relief, that is, until we open. This music is hard!!!

We're finally moving into the Democracy Center space this week, and we'll get a chance to really work out our blocking, etc. We're so excited!

So far, rehearsals have been more fun and games, but we have been getting the work done. I'm sure that now that we're within two weeks of opening, we'll get even more serious, but until then, enjoy this photo taken last night of our musical masterminds, Lisa and Nathan:

Lisa is all business as Mr. Wang hams it up for the camera!
Like I said, it's all fun and games!!!

Yes, and ... Of course, our creative team doesn't only consist of women, but I thought it would be a great opener since without these people, we wouldn't be having a show! (At least not a great one!)

With this said, up first at bat is our esteemed Musical Director and Vocal Coach, Ms. Lisa Joe!

If it weren't for Lisa, we would never have been exposed to "Songs" and definitely would NOT be doing this. I've been taking voice lessons with her for about 5 years now, and I have to attribute all that I "know" to her expertise. She's terrific! In her "off" time (that is, outside of our production) she's a Table Tennis pro. Oh, and she recently bit the bullet and finally got an iPhone. Mucho kudos to Lisa, our Musi-kal dee-rektor! We love her!

I should have posted this next person's photo a while ago, cause without him, we wouldn't know where to go (staging wise) nor envision what the show would look like! And after a long intensive search for capable directors, with names such as Spielberg, and Baz Luhrmann in the mix (and rejected) we decided on Peter J. I have to say that I agree with all of them, as he's very focused, creative and easy to work with, plus, he always uses the same hand gestures over and over again (see the first posting on this blog, as we're all doing it with our hands!). That mere fact alone sold us on Peter, and the rest was just a bonus. Thanks Peter for your guiding "hands"! We love you too!

Would anyone like to see a show without ANY movement or choreography? Anyone? Bueler? BUELER? She has taken this double left-footed dancer and made me into the movement animal I am today! (okay, not really double left-footed, but I have my moments - who doesn't?!). It has been such a pleasure to have her on our team, and we are most grateful to her for her talents and PATIENCE! We are UBER thankful to have her with us :)

As well all know, pianos don't play by themselves (or DO they?). In our case, our pianos don't play by themselves, so we needed a super (insert filipino accent here) tal-lehn-tehd (talented) musican/pianist to help bring our rehearsals to life, and we were so happy to get Marc Macalintal to lend his magic fingers to us! (Perhaps we should be thanking his wife MJ for lending Marc out to us. Either way, we're grateful). We've known Marc for a number of years now, and have worked with him on other projects, like 2005's production of "Imelda: A New Musical" or with his ultra funny band of improvisers - Room to Improv. Marc has also musical directed a number of shows throughout his illustrious career, and he's just plain awesome. Although he's not smiling in this photo below, he's happy. And funny. We were working on the title song "A New World" which basically states that your life as you know it would change, and that the way in which you think things would turn out, wouldn't always happen. That there would be an "unexpected bend" that you would have to cross. The song really resonated with me, as a week or so later, my beloved grandmother of 91 years passed away peacefully in her sleep. I'm not sure if I read too much into the song, in that it foreshadowed how my life was going to change with her passing, but it made me realize that when things are going the way you think it should, life throws you a curve that you have to deal with.

With my Grandmother's passing, I decided to look into the possibility of producing "Songs" by contacting Musical Theater International in New York, which oversees the rights management of many of the most popular musicals ever created. Thankfully, "Songs" was available, and I jumped at the opportunity to get the rights for it and produce it with the sole intention of dedicating the production to my Grandmother.

Sure, it's no "Wicked" or perhaps even a "West Side Story", but if you really listen to the songs, and the characters singing them, they remind you that life is as quirky, enjoyable, uplifting, sad, and challenging, and that we should all cherish each experience we have however big or small. Our hope as producers, creatives, cast and crew is that you come out and watch our production, enjoy a night of fantastic talent and theater, experience JANM's Democracy Center, and leave with an appreciation of life as we know it.

Lastly, I want to share a photo with you of my Grandmother and me, taken on her 90th birthday a few years ago. Just like with your own Grandparents, mine was the best one I ever knew, and I dedicate my part of this terrific production to her :)Yes, and ... I'd have to say that she definitely sings more than I do, which completely makes her such a strong component of this cast.

What's most "cool" about Helen's parts is that she gets to play a huge range of characters! All memorable, and a joy to watch. Trust me. You've got to see why she's this type of socialite, and what she does as that character. (Come on, at this point with reading this blog, do you honestly think I'm going to spill the beans and tell you what she's going to do?! LOL!!!!)

The other part of this introduction is to also point out that Helen is co-producing "Songs" with me. Let me tell you, without her, I'd be lost! Believe me! She has the organization skills of a Martha Stewart and the diplomacy of a politician looking for the release of captives! (Okay, kinda going overboard with that analogy, but hey, it kinda works). I am so thankful for all the work that she is doing, juggling both the singing/acting with the producing responsibilities. What a god send! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

So come out and check out our show! Especially for those of you who haven't seen Helen act like a socialite before!

Here's to Woman TWO!

MP

Yes, and ... I wasn't into acting yet at the time, but I distinctly remember seeing her performance and thinking to myself, "Wow, that's how good an actor I would like to be someday!". Although she was an understudy in the show, her performance was terrific and inspiring! And if she's reading this, I'm certain her head is swelling larger than it usually is! ;p

Since then, I've had the pleasure of working with her on several different projects, from my first movie ever "Much Adobo About Nothing", "A Jivebomber's X-mas", to "Imelda: A New Musical". But since our early days of acting, I've always known Myra had the "chops" to make any performance great, and have always looked forward working with her. Plus, ever since "Jivebomber's", where we played brother and sister, our relationship has stayed on that same exact track. We constantly act like brother and sister, with me ALWAYS getting the best of her! Ha!

We are so happy to have Myra as part of our production, playing the role(s) of Woman ONE. Just like Randy in the earlier post, Woman one takes care of the soprano parts in the show, which are gymnastic to say the least! She also has some truly memorable songs that are certain to bring tears to everyone eyes. She's dressed in a hospital smock because... oops! Sorry! Again, can't reveal it, you'll just have to come out and WATCH the show :)

That's a'boot all I have to say about Myra, Eh?

(She's from Canada BTW, hence the Candian-isms. Kinda.

For those of you unfamiliar with "Songs", the cast is comprised of four actors who play different roles throughout the show. Because of this, each actor is listed as "Man 1" or "Woman 2" throughout the libretto and piano/vocal score. Each song has a "character" than can be created by the director/actor for each individual production of songs. Follow me? This way, you'll never really see the same exact version of "Songs" twice, because each production will have a different take on each of the songs and the characters portrayed within them.

With this said, we'd like to introduce to you our "Man ONE", Randy. Randy will be singing all the tenor parts in the show because he has an amazing voice! For those of you who may recognize him, he is part of the Three Filipino Tenors that have been performing throughout the years at various venues, including East West Players, and JANM as well. A vocal major in college, Randy will thrill and delight you with his smooth, lyrical style, GUARANTEED to make you swoon (Okay, maybe not guaranteed, but you'll definitely like him :) - Wow, I sound like I'm auctioning him off! Nope, sorry! In order to witness his vocal prowess, you'll have to come out and watch our show :)

Oh, and the reason why he's listed as a "wannabe basketball" player in an earlier post here is because... well, come out and watch the show, and you'll find out! ;p

As with the rest of our production staff and cast, we are thrilled to have Randy as a part of this show! We can't wait for everyone to see and hear him!

Give it up for Man one!Yes, and ...
